Asics puts the foot down

TENNIS

TOP team Asics showed why it’s the team to beat at the peak of the Traralgon Tuesday women’s tennis ladder last week, building a nine-point buffer to second-placed Prince.

Asics and Reebok collided and the former was unrelenting from the outset.

After going down 2-8 in each of the first three sets there was little hope of a comeback for Reebok, though it managed to salvage one of the last three sets.

Powerhouse Asics went on its merry way with a 5-1 (45-24) victory.

Both Trish Henry and Florence Martin won their three sets for Asics.

Dunlop and Yonnex had a much closer duel.

Dunlop batted above its average, knocking off Yonnex which was in third position at the start of play.

After four sets were played it was only two games the difference, with Yonnex holding the edge.

The final two sets went one apiece but Dunlop bridged the gap to scrape home by one game. Jenny Meredith, filling in for Yonnex, won her three sets but it was not enough.

Another nail biter between Babolat and Puma went down to the wire with Puma holding a slight edge all day.

Cathryn Brougham of Babolat won her three sets, but a vital 8-1 set win for Puma was enough to see it over the line by two games in a three-sets-all encounter.

Wilson has been gaining momentum over the past four weeks, and despite Nike throwing everything at it the side continued on its winning way.

Wilson started strong, taking the first two sets, but Nike bounced back to hold the next two.

Wilson was three games up with two sets to play, before an 8-6, 6-8 finish saw Wilson take the spoils 43 to 40 games.

Player of the week was Maiwako Inagi.
