AN off-field victory is being celebrated at Glengarry Football Netball Club, after it was named as a Victorian Good Sports Club of the Year award finalist.
The Good Sports Awards recognise community clubs and people who show leadership in encouraging healthy behaviours to tackle alcohol, obesity and mental health issues through sport.
Glengarry members have undergone Responsible Service of Alcohol training at the club’s expense and members have attended liquor licensing seminars to broaden their knowledge of the issue.
The club has also developed safe transport and smoking policies and free bottled water is provided at events and functions.
Club president Graeme Duncan said everyone involved was delighted that their hard work had been recognised.
“It demonstrates to our members our commitment to being a Good Sports club,” Duncan said.
“It helps us to improve on our efforts so far, and to continue to strive to be even better for our club and our community.”
The Australian Drug Foundation’s pioneering Good Sports program works with more than 6500 clubs nationwide to help them develop healthier and safer environments for their members, and create a healthier future for Australian sports clubs.

TACKLING Australia’s binge drinking culture has seen Gormandale Football Netball Club acknowledged with level three accreditation in the Good Sports program.
Gormandale was recognised as a leader in reducing the link between alcohol and sport in the community.
Club spokesman Peter Barnes said Good Sports was helping to promote positive messages and examples around alcohol.
“Being part of the Good Sports Program helps us send a message to the community about our commitment to providing a safe, healthy and fun environment for players, members and families within our club,” he said.
Good Sports State Victoria manager Rod Glenn-Smith said alcohol was a leading cause of preventable illness and death in Australia, and breaking the link between alcohol and sport had never been more important.
“By joining Good Sports and achieving accreditation, Gormandale Football Netball Club is showing the community that they care about the health and wellbeing of their players and members,” he said.
“Congratulations to the club for leading the way in changing Australia’s binge drinking culture.”
