MOE will house one of Victoria’s five Work and Learn Centres, aimed to assist public housing residents to seek jobs and educational training.
In partnership with Brotherhood of St Laurence, the State Government invested $4.6 million to establish the centres, with one to operate from the Gippsland Employment Skills Training offices in Moe and outreach services to Morwell.
GEST acting chief executive Noreen Plozza said the centre would support public housing residents with education, training, health and aged care as well as with new technologies.
“We will be providing extra support to public housing tenants in Moe and Morwell to ensure individuals can overcome the barriers to employment, and help them reach their career goals,” Ms Plozza said.
The Work and Learning Centre, Moe joins recently opened Carlton and Geelong centres, while a fourth centre has been announced for Ballarat.
In the first six months of operation, the Geelong centre has helped assist 174 clients with support plans and 117 have been supported into employment and training.
The Work and Learning Centre concept aims to help people in areas with high concentrations of public housing and disadvantage.
Tenants will have access to advisers, computers, and a range of training programs where they can develop individual plans to identify barriers to employment.
GEST provides training in horticulture, retail, hospitality, aged care, home and community care, information technology, forklift and construction induction and first aid.
