The final volume of the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry’s 2015/16 report will be tabled in State Parliament this week.
It was delivered to Governor of Victoria Linda Dessau on Thursday and relates to mine rehabilitation in the Latrobe Valley.
The document provides short, medium and long term options for rehabilitation of the mines, and a review of the current rehabilitation liability assessments and rehabilitation bond system.
It marks the conclusion of the inquiry, which was reopened on 26 May 2015.
Since then it has delivered four volumes of its report which investigated the fire risk at the Anglesea Mine for the 2015/16 summer, whether there was an increase in deaths as a result of the 2014 Hazelwood Mine Fire, opportunities to improve health in the Latrobe Valley and mine rehabilitation.
“We have covered a great deal in the last 10 months and we wish to thank all those members of the community and those from community groups and organisations, who took time out of their day to work with us,” chair of the Board of Inquiry Justice Bernard Teague said.
“We also wish to thank all the panel members, witnesses and experts who contributed to our investigations in a truly open and honest manner.
“I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Anita Roper who due to a medical condition could not be here today.
“Her work during her time at the inquiry was invaluable and both Professor Catford and I along with the staff from the secretariat wish her all the best in her recovery.”
