The Morwell and Districts Community Recovery Committee will continue to operate for at least another year, possibly up to three, its chair has revealed.
Although the committee had hoped to transition to a ‘resilience’ phase this year, chair Carolyne Boothman said its role was still focused on recovery, particularly as the re-opened Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry recommendations had recently been endorsed by government.
“We see our role as ensuring they’re being upheld,” Ms Boothman said.
“Most of the surveys we’ve been doing are showing the community’s very much moved on from the mine fire.
“There are ongoing concerns, however, regarding their health and there’s always fear of another incident occurring.”
The group meets monthly following the February 2014 bushfires and mine fire and corresponds with government agencies and ministers about resident views and concerns.
Its membership includes representatives from Latrobe City Council, Berry Street, Red Cross Gippsland, St Vincent’s Primary School, Advance Morwell, Relationships Australia, Latrobe City Youth Council, Mind Australia and Morwell Football and Netball Club.
It is preparing to launch a website in a bid to help create awareness about its role and actions.
