An aggressive attempt by Morwell to force a result in its Central Gippsland Cricket Association first grade match against Moe backfired on Saturday when the Lions managed to chase down the Tigers’ score.
Morwell posted 4/114 before declaring in the 23rd over, posting a total which Moe was able to chase down in 29 overs for the loss of just three wickets.
The Tigers lost the toss and were sent
Import Jordan Campbell (1) was out soon after, bringing all-rounder Brendan Brincat (43 not out) to the crease with captain Rory Hare.

The wicket brought Mark Cukier (30 not out) to the crease with the score at 4/50, with the incoming batsman combining with Brincat to form a 64-run partnership before rain stopped play.

But the declaration did not have the desired effect, with Moe openers Kane O’Connell (54) and Lucas Fry (32) putting on 84 before O’Connell was stumped off the bowling of Brent Reside.

Moe captain Andrew Philip, who was unavailable for selection and did not play in the match, said it was important to win early in the season.

Despite Morwell being the more fancied team, he said it was not the result which surprised him about the game.
“I didn’t expect there to be any play to be honest (because of the rain),” Philip said.
“I know we’ve got quality batsmen who can get defendable totals and chase down some decent totals.”

Mirboo North v Yallourn North
LEAGUE powerhouse Mirboo North strengthened its position at the top of the table with an easy win against Yallourn North on Saturday.
The Tigers won the toss and decided to send their opponents in to bat at Mirboo North Recreation Reserve.
It was a decision that paid immediate dividends, with Nick Gooden (1), captain Callum Polo (2) and William Lawrey (7) all out to leave the score at 3/10.
Daniel Martini and Jake Redman tried to get the innings back on track, but the pair had only put on 15 runs when Redman was out for six.
Martini carried on but his dismissal for 18 with the score on 40 sparked another collapse.

His dismissal for 15 brought the Bombers’ innings to a close, all out for 73 in 29.4 overs.
Jarrod Speed was the leading wicket taker for Mirboo North with 4/27 and was ably supported by William Cheatley (3/12) and spinner Dale Banks (2/9).
Tigers openers Adam Mates and Jesse Giardina (89) got their team off to a great start with a 120-run partnership.
Yallourn North’s total was an afterthought by the time Mates was dismissed for 34 and it was not long before Giardina joined him in the pavilion after he was out caught and bowled by Getzendorfer.
Captain Shane Peters continued to attack for the batsmen, making 55 before he was out with the score at 4/213.
The Tigers ended their innings 6/243 off 45 overs.

Mirboo North is now more than 16 points clear of second-placed Latrobe at the top of the table, while Yallourn North is in
Trafalgar v Jeeralang Boolarra
TRAFALGAR’S match against Jeeralang Boolarra was abandoned in the 12th over.
The Panthers won the toss and sent the Ships in.
Liam White (6 not out) and Marco Higgins (14 not out) took the score to 27 before play was abandoned.
Trafalgar is now in third place while Jeeralang Boolarra is sixth.
Latrobe had the bye.
