Traralgon makes it 10 on the trot

The Traralgon Swimming Club won its 10th Victorian Country Short Course Championship title last week, returning from the Wangaratta Leisure Centre with 25 gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze medals.

The team of 60 swimmers competed in 300 events earning the club an accumulated 1,910 points, well clear of its nearest rivals Geelong (692) and Warrnambool (604).

Nineteen swimmers won medals at the event, which was held at Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre on 19 and 20 August.

Eleven-year-old Molly Cargill, who won every event in country-record-breaking time.

Seventeen-year-old Melina deCort was the dominant swimmer in her age group, winning eight medals, five of which were gold.

Not to be outdone by his younger sister, Jordyn Cargill (12) also won five gold medals.

Senior head coach Brian Ford praised his team of swimmers, coaches and team managers.

“This is a meet where the club takes the team away as a group and stays together,” Ford said.

“It is important that all coaches, swimmers and team managers know their role for the weekend of competition.

“Teamwork, hard racing and support for each other is paramount to success and over this weekend we reaped the benefits of being a cohesive and determined team.

“Individual success came to many and this translated to a great team win and we are very proud of our 10th successive win.”
