Singing songs and dancing with children is probably not what springs to mind when you think of an Anglican priest, let alone an Archdeacon.
However, newly-appointed, Trafalgar-based Archdeacon Sue Jacka is not one to stick to convention – nor is she afraid to dance.
The Express met with Archdeacon Jacka to chat about her recent promotion on a Tuesday morning which is when she facilitates Mainly Music – a program for mothers of pre-kindergarten-aged children where singing is the main order of the day.
“I’m very keen on community development and working that way which is why I do programs like this and after school programs,” she said.
“I think [the church] has a multi-pronged role. There is always going to be the spiritual needs of the community and that takes different shapes.
“But I think a lot of people [in this area] don’t have many family connections, so in this program we always try to have a ‘thinkspot’ – a lot of it is about encouragement, because parenting is really hard.”
