It will be an egg-stravaganza at Morwell Neighbourhood House this Easter following community donations of chocolate bunnies and eggs to the house’s food bank program.
Member for Morwell Russell Northe collected the chocolate donations from community members at his office in Morwell and dropped the basket of goodies to the house on Tuesday morning.
House manager Tracie Lund said the donation meant many families who might not otherwise be able to afford Easter chocolate could celebrate some Easter cheer this weekend.
“We think it is important that they have choice and that their choice is not taken away simply because they’re in a difficult situation financially,” she said.
“The [donations] mean Easter can be brought to them.”
Mr Northe said Easter was a holiday that could often be “neglected”.
“Unfortunately, there is a lot of disadvantage in our community,” he said.
“There is a lot of support at key times of the year, such as Christmas, but Easter is probably neglected to some degree.”
While providing Easter chocolate for families experiencing “hard times” might “not sound like a significant thing to many people”, Mr Northe said it was “critically important” for families to share in Easter cheer.
“I have been really pleased with the significant number of people dropping off Easter eggs and bunnies to the office,” he said.
“I hope it makes a small but positive difference to people in our community.
“I’m also aware of other similar drives operated by Berry Street and Quantum Support Services – we’re all here to support the community.”
