DSE Gippsland firefighter dies in Tasmania

A GIPPSLAND firefighter aged in his 60s died while carrying out his duties in Tasmania yesterday afternoon.

A statement from Department of Sustainability secretary Greg Wilson said the man was part of the Victorian contingent of firefighters sent to assist with the bushfires in the state.

He was found deceased near Taranna in southeastern Tasmania where he had been working on foot to identify potential containment lines on the southern boundary of the Forcett fire, two to three kilometres from the active fire edge.

Local police have said the death was not under suspicious circumstances.
