Dedication to Walhalla results in OAM honour

BEVERLY Holmes, of Yallourn North has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.

Ms Holmes was commended for her service to the community of Walhalla.

As part of her extensive involvement in the Walhalla Heritage and Development League
since 1968, she has played a key role in organising fundraisers, including the Two Queens
Jubilee in 2012.

She is an Honorary Life Member of 30 years, former secretary, and museum curator.

The humble woman said she accepted them award on behalf of the Walhalla Heritage and
Development League.

Ms Holmes expressed that she feels the League as a whole deserve recognition for their
contributions to the township of Walhalla over the years.

She said there are many other people involved who have worked for Walhalla for a very long period of time and the League’s work as a collective “has resulted in the beautiful town we see today”.

“The League began in 1945 and has been responsible for restoring the band rotunda the
Fire Station, the historic Corner Stores housing the Walhalla Museum and other infrastructure around the town,” Ms Holmes said.

“Without this early work there would be no original buildings left today.”

Ms Holmes’ volunteer work at the Old Walhalla Post Office, and membership at the
Walhalla Cricket Club was also noted.
