Latrobe City Council has paved the way for a major residential development to progress in the Moe-Newborough area.
The ‘Monash Views’ plan will features more than 220 lots and is designed to integrate with the Yallourn Golf Course.
It will now be finalised ahead of a planning permit application to council.
“The development was identified as a unique lifestyle precinct that would add to the growth opportunities and desirability of Moe-Newborough, attract young families to the area and provide local construction employment and flow-on effects for local businesses,” Latrobe City Mayor Sandy Kam said.
In a bid to address community concern the development could negatively impact the nearby Blue Rock Motorcycle Club and Gippsland Car Club, council will subject the proposal to a detailed land management plan, which will also focus on stormwater, waterways, native vegetation, threatened species and landscape.
Speaking at a council meeting last week, Peter Farrugia said he feared new residents would complain about the noise of both clubs and this could put their future at risk.
He also raised concerns about entry to the new estate from Coach Road.
According to a council officer’s report, if council approves the development, it will reduce the speed limit to 60 kilometres per hour.
At the meeting, Cr Sharon Gibson said Monash Views had the “potential to be one of the prime developments not just in Newborough, but in the Latrobe Valley”.
Of 34 submissions received in response to the proposal, 31 were in support.
