VOTERS in McMillan electorate have been urged to “pay careful attention” when voting on Saturday due to the high number of candidates running for election.
McMillan divisional returning officer Darren McNair said 13 candidates were standing for election and would appear on the green House of Representatives ballot paper.
“With such a large number of candidates, it is important that voters take care to number all candidates in the order of their preference from 1 to 13,” he said.
“You must number every box for your vote to count.”
Mr McNair said voters would also receive a white Senate ballot paper, which would give them the choice of marking ‘1’ in a box above the line for a party or group, or numbering all the boxes below the line in the order of preference.
“If you want to vote for a candidate that does not have a box above the line, you need to vote below the line,” he said.
“Place number ‘1’ in the box beside the candidate of your choice and continue to number every box below the line, in the order of your choice from 1 to 97.
“There are instructions on the top of each ballot paper, but don’t worry if you do make a mistake because you can ask a polling official for another ballot paper and start again.
“You can choose how to number your ballot papers. You may or may not decide to follow the how-to-vote cards that candidate representatives may give you outside the polling place.”
Polling places will be open from 8am to 6pm on election day and voters can find their local polling place using the polling place locator on the AEC website at
