The incredible fundraising efforts of a Moe man, which saw almost $1 million raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital, have been recognised with the prestigious Dame Elisabeth Murdoch award.
Darell Benjamin OAM, who has been raising funds for the Royal Children’s Good Friday Appeal since 1978, was awarded the top honour by Premier Denis Napthine at the Premier’s Volunteer Awards at the weekend.
“Mr Benjamin is a terrific winner of the first Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Award. He represents the genuine grass roots community volunteer who are the heart of the soul of many local communities across the state,” Dr Napthine said.
Mr Benjamin, a 2004 Latrobe City Citizen of the Year, was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his year-round fundraising efforts in 2008, and remains committed to reaching the $1 million target.
As part of the award, Mr Benjamin received $10,000 for his chosen charity.
