Preservation effort

THE virtues of Walhalla’s historic Horseshoe Bend Tunnel will be highlighted to a state parliamentary committee this week in a bid to help preserve its surrounds.

Friends of the Horseshoe Bend Tunnel member Terry Lowater will make a presentation to the Environment and Natural Resources Committee on Thursday in Lakes Entrance as part of an inquiry into heritage tourism and ecotourism in Victoria.

“Hopefully they’ll see the tourism potential for the area,” Mr Lowater said.

The friends group opposes plans by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority to deepen the horseshoe bend section of the Thomson River in a bid to provide safe passage for native, migratory fish like the Australian Grayling.

Baw Baw Shire Council last month voiced its concerns about the WGCMA proposal, voting to write to Water Minister Peter Walsh requesting it become subject to an Environmental Effects Statement.
