In tune with the beat

Playing beats for thousands of people is the dream of most up-and-coming disc jockeys, but for a Newborough hopeful, this dream may just come true in the near future.

Twenty-one year-old business student Tom Davy has been selected to compete in YourShot, an Australia-wide competition which takes young people with no deejaying experience and transforms them into DJs.

Over the past couple of months, Mr Davy has undergone extensive DJ training at DJ Warehouse in Richmond to compile his 25-minute track, which he said would hopefully help him win the competition.

If successful, Mr Davy will open for the renowned two-day music festival Stereosonic 2013 and then perform overseas.

Mr Davy, who described his passion to make people happy through his music, said he loved music and “the vibe that it gives up”.

“I’ve been to festivals and I want to be someone like Swedish House Mafia, Avicii; I’d want to be someone like that – someone on stage seeing people love what you love to do,” he said.

Seventy-two people were picked from each state to participate in the competition, which helped prepare the DJs who would then perform at a Melbourne nightclub day party for 25 minutes before being judged.

“It’s been the craziest thing I’ve ever done, I’m losing sleep,” Mr Davy said.

Hoping crowds will enjoy his eclectic mash-ups, Mr Davy said he wished to wow people with musical additions which were sure to surprise.

“I’m really into progressive house, electro house kind of stuff… I’m just trying to be a bit different, I’m even trying to incorporate a bit of punk and stuff in there; there’s a mash up of Blink 182 and one of my favourites is Blur’s ‘Song 2’ with ‘I love it’ by Icona Pop,” he said.

“I just want to try and bring something different to the competition.”

Mr Davy will compete in the Your Shot final on Saturday, 3 August at the Royal Melbourne Hotel.

Spectator entry to the event is $10.
