Creating healthy choices

Fair and affordable access to healthy food was a topic of juicy discussion at Kernot Hall in Morwell yesterday, where the creation of an innovative food network was workshopped at the Latrobe Food Forum.

Coming as part of Healthy Together Latrobe, a joint initiative between Latrobe City Council and Latrobe Community Health Services, the forum was set up to explore ways of improving Latrobe Valley residents’ access to healthy food produced.

“At the end of the day, access to healthy food needs to be fair and affordable, for consumers, growers, and everyone in between – today is about finding ways to improve that,” Healthy Together Latrobe coordinator healthy communities Amelie Ivkovic said.

With about 75 suppliers, producers and other food system stakeholders in attendance, the group worked together to brainstorm new arrangements and supply options between local producers and residents.

LCHS food systems research officer Julia McCartan said the initiative had already attracted good feedback from a range of organisations.

“The momentum and the enthusiasm from the community is definitely here on this – we are going to make this happen,” she said
