YOUNG people across Latrobe Valley will soon have access to healthcare and counselling services at headspace’s new centre on the corner of Hazelwood Road and George Street, Morwell.
From 25 May, the Central West Gippsland headspace centre on Buckley Street will move its services to a custom-built service delivery site with more space and facilities.
Gippsland Medicare Local chief executive Peter Quigley said the relocation had been in the pipeline for more than two years.
“The current headspace site is no longer fit for purpose, based on service provision and staff occupancy,” Mr Quigley said.
“Staff and other service providers are looking forward to the new centre opening, which will be a first-class service to young people of the Morwell and district community,” he said.
A team of young people has been involved in the design, layout and decor of the new facility, which will cater for increased service providers.
This will see consulting rooms for general practitioners and specialist health providers along with more activity areas for meeting and conducting programs.
With youth the main focus of each headspace service, Mr Quigley said he expected the relocation would reach more numbers for those seeking help or advice.
“Certainly the centre – because it is a larger, fit for purpose site – we would hope it is better located and easier to access for young people,” Mr Quigley said.
“It would be reasonable to assume it would be easier for young people to access and will see an increase in numbers attending the centres.”
An official launch will be held in the near future, but in the meantime Mr Quigley invited people aged between 12 and 25 years to “drop in”.
“We encourage young people and their parents who have concerns about their health or wellbeing to drop in or contact the centre,” he said.
