Bushfire conference returning to the Valley

Following the success of the Living with Bushfire community conference in the Latrobe Valley last year, organisers have announced the event will take place again in October.

Federation University Gippsland will again host the event with conference dates set for Friday, 9 and Saturday, 10 October.

FedUni Head of Campus Harry Ballis said organisers were pleased at the positive response to last year’s event.

Many saw the event as an opportunity to hear the latest research and thinking about fire risk, behaviour and household protection.

“With specialists, researchers, firefighters and community members together in one venue we were able to have broad community discussion and constructive conversations about how we can live with bushfire into the future,” Dr Ballis said.

“We hope to build on this success with an even better event this year, which will incorporate many of the ideas and suggestions made by last year’s conference participants.”

Early this year organisers delivered on their commitment to 2014 conference participants to donate $2000 in excess funds from the 2014 event to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.

The conference is a joint initiative of Federation University Australia, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Country Fire Authority, Latrobe City Council and Parks Victoria.

Tickets are priced at $20 per day.
