Second spot up for grabs in Mid Gippsland footy

FOOTBALL

MID GIPPSLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Round 16

THIS is a must-win game for Yinnar and Mirboo North with second place on the Mid Gippsland football ladder up for grabs.

In their last match the Tigers got in by 16 points in a tough scrap with the Magpies kicking themselves out of the contest.

Yinnar has been either first or second for the season while Mirboo North has hovered between third and fourth.

A lot is riding on this game, especially Mirboo North which is chasing its third flag.

Securing second position would be a lot easier way to accomplish this.

While there are four points the difference on the table, Yinnar’s percentage is an advantage if both finish on the same number of points.

If Tim Aitken returns for Yinnar then two of the best forwards in the league (the other being Tim Traill) will be providing the entertainment.

>Last time: Mirboo North 11.7 (73) d Yinnar 7.15 (57)

Trafalgar v Yarragon

YARRAGON holds the key to who takes fifth position as the Panthers control the destinies of Thorpdale and Trafalgar.

The Bloods are trying to sneak in to fifth and are two points behind Thorpdale who are desperately hanging on.

Yarragon could do the Blues a favour by defeating Trafalgar (for the second time this season) and give them a little bit of breathing space.

Earlier this season Trafalgar seemed a long way from challenging for fifth, but wins and a couple of losses to Thorpdale had put the Bloods in the box seat.

On form Trafalgar would be a good bet to win, but Yarragon knows it has beaten the Bloods this season and could do it again.

>Last time: Yarragon 8.8 (56) d Trafalgar 5.10 (40)

Morwell East v Boolarra

IT has been a rough year for Boolarra after finishing finalists last year to near bottom this season, but it still has plenty of fight left in it as last week’s result testifies.

Morwell East has not set the league on fire this season, but it has been competitive in most games winning six matches.

With pride at stake this match could go to the wire with very little at the finish.

>Last Time: Boolarra 13.9 (87) d Morwell East 11.17 (83)

Thorpdale v Newborough

THIS is a match Thorpdale can not lose knowing this potentially could make or break their season.

Last time the Blues played horrible against Newborough and will not want to repeat that effort.

Injuries have played havoc with Thorpdale and it has been a struggle to field a fit side each week.

It would be disappointing if Thorpdale missed out on finals after getting so close and holding on to fifth for many weeks.

Newborough wants to be there in three weeks time to make a challenge for its fourth successive grand final berth.

It will be tough for both sides and an exciting match should be on show.

>Last Time: Newborough 18.13 (121) d Thorpdale 7.6 (48).

Yallourn-Yallourn North v Hill End

YALLOURN-Yallourn North has another chance to pick up four points and stretch its unbeaten run to 15.

It has been a successful season so far and to finish top would be the first step towards a premiership berth.

While Hill End is on the bottom it will still be striving for its first win.

It has been a disappointing season for the Hillmen and no-one wants to see a team finish without a win, but for them the winning feeling may have to wait another week as YYN could be too strong.

>Last Time: YYN 8.8 (56) d Hill End 6.3 (39)
