Aviation academy plan

Up-and-coming aviation specialists will receive world class training at Gippsland airports as part of Federation Training’s movement towards the establishment of a flight academy.

According to the training provider, the state’s aviation sector was facing a shortage of licensed aircraft maintenance staff, in particular those specialising in large commercial aircraft, and a variety of courses and apprenticeships were being developed to fill those needs at the Sale campus.

“Federation Training is responding to a current worldwide skills shortage of licensed aviation maintenance engineers,” Federation Training business partnership consultant Fred Vanderslik said.

“While several institutions throughout Victoria offer Certificate II and IV in Aeroskills, Federation Training will be providing apprentices with the chance to progress into their Diploma of Aeroskills course.

“The only one of its kind in Victoria, this course will equip graduates with the licence to maintain large commercial aircraft.”

Mr Vanderslik said the training program was the first step towards the development of the Federation Academy of Aviation, which would offer state-of-the-art courses in aeroplane maintenance and flight training to local students.

Through the academy, students would train across the state’s regional airports including the Latrobe Valley, East Gippsland and Ballarat, as well as Melbourne’s Moorabbin and Essendon airports.

The range of programs offered at Mahindra Aerospace would also be expanded.

Mr Vanderslik said the course, along with the future academy, would provide local apprentices with worldwide skills while generating a range of new employment opportunities throughout the Latrobe Valley.

“There are long term plans in place to transform the Latrobe Valley into a centralised aviation hub, with partnerships with the Latrobe Regional Airport, the Mahindra Aerospace and the Federation Academy of Aviation supporting increased investment opportunity throughout the region,” Mr Vanderslik said.
