Dry countryside ignites fire fears

A LAWNMOWER that caused a grass and scrub fire at Hazelwood South on Friday was a timely reminder of the risks of a dry countryside.

CFA units from Churchill, Hazelwood North, Yinnar and about 20 firefighters responded to the fire at Rules Road near Churchill about 2.20pm.

CFA District 27 operations manager Bill Johnstone said even though there had been rain, the incident highlighted how dry the area was and how easily a fire could start.

“The countryside is still dry and is burning quite easily and vigilantly,” Mr Johnstone said.
