Something as simple as a shared meal is hoped to bring the Churchill community together and offer those feeling isolated or in need, a place to build relationships.
A community cafe is now open at Churchill Neighbourhood Centre for all residents to share a meal on Mondays from 12.30pm.
The cafe kick-started last month on the back of a collaborative effort between the neighbourhood centre, Cooperating Churches of Churchill, Yinnar and Boolarra, and St Vincent de Paul Society.
At the cafe volunteers will prepare a meal from 10am for a 12.30pm lunch, with the aim to get locals socialising and meeting new people.
“There’s a dignity in coming and sharing what other people are doing, rather than having food delivered to your door or having to go to a food bank or something like that,” St Vincent de Paul Society president Marg Mcquillen said.
“It just gives dignity to people, to come and share with others.”
All members of the community are invited to attend and take part in the meal, with those who can afford it to donate a gold coin.
Volunteers or donations are also needed to keep the cafe running.
Donations can be dropped into the Churchill Neighbourhood Centre, 9-11 Philip Parade, or at the Cooperating Churches, Churchill.
