STUDENTS at Lumi Christi Primary School braved the spring rain in Churchill last week to participate in Walk to School month.
Students from all year levels were invited to join staff members for a walk to school event, one of many the school holds throughout the year.
School wellbeing leader Joanne Leviston said the aim of the events were to promote fitness and encourage health, wellbeing and a sense of community.
Post-walk students were treated to a healthy snack of fruit sticks.
“We’re part of the Healthy Together Latrobe program and ‘walk to school’ is a big part of what we offer our students,” Ms Leviston said.
“We also host family breakfast once a term to promote eating breakfast and building up community.”
She said it was up to students whether they took part in the walking programs, with some choosing to ride while others were dropped off part of the way by parents.
“Some parents aren’t comfortable with kids walking by themselves so we’re also targeting them by having staff walk with the students,” Ms Leviston said.
“We just want kids to be active.”
October is Walk to School month.
Organised by VicHealth, the initiative aims to encourage Victorian primary students to walk, ride or scoot to and from school, kick-starting healthy and active habits for life.
