Police are investigating the circumstances of a fatal collision in Newborough which occurred about 4pm on Tuesday.
Investigators have been told a car driven by an 80 year-old woman was travelling on the Princes Freeway on-ramp at Gunns Gully and collided with a truck travelling east on the Princes Freeway.
The driver of the car, who was the sole occupant, received life threatening injuries.
The woman was airlifted to hospital but died a short time later.
The male driver of the truck was not injured.

Police are investigating a burglary which occurred at a cycle store in Tarwin Street, Morwell between 1am and 3.30am on Saturday 7 January.
Police said the offender has returned to the store three times during the time period, stealing a purple “Sweet Tooth” model Colony brand BMX, Kestrel road bike and a black and white “Dirt-E” model Giant brand electric mountain bike.

Latrobe Crime Investigation detectives are investigating a fire which occurred in a pine plantation off Glendonald Road, Churchill about 4.30pm on Saturday, 14 January.
A witness noticed smoke coming from an area of the plantation and contacted the Country Fire Authority which attended and extinguished the fire.
There was minor damage to grass and trees in the area and police are investigating the cause.
