It’s time for a new pool

Calls for a new Traralgon-based aquatic centre are louder than ever after a community petition was launched yesterday.

The ‘It’s Time’ committee, chaired by Member for Morwell Russell Northe, hopes to pool together signatures from across the region to back the construction of a Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre to replace the existing Traralgon outdoor facility.

With concept plans already adopted by Latrobe City Council it’s now just a matter of funding, and the community group hopes to lobby the State Government for just that through weight of numbers.

“The existing outdoor pool is substantially outdated and under-utilised, and has not had any significant investment since it’s opening in 1959,” Mr Northe said.

“With a growing population of more than 28,000 residents, and given the recent closure of the privately owned Traralgon Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre ‘It’s Time’ for this major project to be delivered.”

The petition can be signed online via the Facebook group Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre – IT’S TIME and the group will be seeking signatures around town.

Hard copies of the petition are available from Mr Northe’s electorate office located at 66 George Street, Morwell, Melina Bath’s electorate office Shop 2, 181 Franklin Street, Traralgon and online at www.russellnorthe.com.au/petitions
