A Melbourne-based organisation supporting Aboriginal women experiencing family violence opened its Latrobe Valley office in Morwell on Monday as a place for local Indigenous women to seek help.
Djirra, an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation that started in 2002, now has seven regional offices across Victoria.
Djirra chief executive Antoinette Braybrook said opening a new office in the Valley aimed to address the gaps in service delivery targeting Aboriginal survivors of family violence.
Ms Braybrook referred to the latest report from the Gippsland Legal Assistance Forum which highlighted the need to improve legal services and other family violence support to women and children experiencing violence at home.
“Djirra’s new office here is an important step towards meeting this unmet legal need and increasing access to culturally safe and specialist support for Aboriginal victim survivors.”
