Chunxing chief executive officer Dr Lakshman Jayaweera has penned a letter to the Latrobe Valley community, stressing the company is “committed to employing local people”.
“Chunxing Corporation welcomes the Victorian Government’s identification of the proposed Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling facility through the Development Facilitation Program,” it reads.
“Chunxing Corporation acknowledges the importance of the building and construction sector to revitalise the regional and Victorian economy.
“The ULAB recycling facility will deliver important resource recovery infrastructure contributing to the implementation of the Victoria’s Recycling Infrastructure Plan.
“World’s best practice technology will be applied in achieving the highest possible environmental standards.
“This has been independently verified by experts during the approval process.”
Dr Jayaweera also said Chunxing would be an “active member” in the Gippsland community and contribute to the economy “for the long-term, sustainably, as a local citizen into the future”.
“Chunxing Corporation is committed to employing local people and service industries given the right qualifications and experience,” the letter reads.
“Initially, this will be 68 personnel with up to 100 indirect jobs, including for the socially disadvantaged.
“The ULAB recycling facility will also provide a substantial broader public benefit as it kick-starts the opportunity for future investment into the region, including from battery manufacturing and energy storage.
“The ULAB recycling facility will contribute $30 million annually to the local economy.
“Chunxing Corporation is committed to the Latrobe Valley and looks forward to creating resource recovery opportunities for the benefit of the Gippsland region and reducing the need for landfill.
“Chunxing Corporation thanks and acknowledges the valuable input from stakeholders during the approval process and affirms its open invitation to the community to address any queries.”
