Defers request

 

A REQUEST for funds to provide a YMCA holiday program in Traralgon early next year has been deferred by the City Council until additional information can be obtained.

This was decided at a Traralgon City Council meeting last week. The request for funds was made by the secretary of Traralgon YMCA, Mr Paul Whiteley.

Mr Whiteley said that the holiday program was scheduled for January next year and would be similar to those run in the past by the YMCA in Traralgon.

Minister approves shire election arrangements

VICTORIAN Local Government Minister Rob Maclellan has formally approved the local government election arrangements recommended by the Shire of Wellington.

Under an order published in the Government Gazette earlier this month, Wellington shire will be governed by a council of seven members to be elected in March next year.

The municipality will be unsubdivided.

The Victorian Electoral Commission will conduct the 1997 election on behalf of the shire utilising the traditional attendance method of voting as opposed to postal ballot.

During the later part of this year, all local councils will undertake an extensive information campaign to inform residents about the forthcoming election.

Training and information courses will also be provided for prospective councillors.

The minister’s decision formally approved the election arrangements in line with a recommendation adopted by the Wellington shire commissioners in late May.

Creative precinct funding confirmed

MEMBER for Gippsland Darren Chester has confirmed the Federal Government’s $10 million commitment towards building the Latrobe Creative Precinct.

The MP presented a letter, co-signed by Regional Development Minister Fiona Nash, to Latrobe City Council mayor Michael Rossiter, which outlines details of the election commitment made in June.

Mr Chester said the government’s share of the funding had been fully budgeted for and the project would be delivered.

The State Government and council have also committed $10 million each towards the $30 million project, which will revitalise Latrobe’s arts and creative industries.

The federal funding will be delivered through the Community Development Grants program, which funds community infrastructure projects across Australia.
