Southside unites for all abilities

THE Southside Junior Football Club last week united to support its all abilities football team on debut under lights at Duncan Cameron Reserve, Traralgon.

The ability team is comprised of dedicated young footballers from across Gippsland with special needs who train together every week at Southside.

“To many kids it’s the norm (to) choose a sport and play a game (and) be part of a team,” coach Greg Lawrence said.

“Our ability team has been practicing for nearly two seasons now and this (was) their first football match.

“This match isn’t something we take for granted, it takes a lot of determination for our kids to get out on the ground.”

A large crowd was enthralled as the all abilities side, with a few ring-ins, parents and carers, took on the combined Southside Club.

“It was inspirational, the kids that supported and played against the ability side all volunteered their time… it really was community at its best,” Lawrence said.

The co-captains of the ability team, Kyle Oosterkamp and Jack Lyon, showed strategic nous early from the coaching box, moving key players frequently to keep the corridor open and flood the forward line.

Alex McLeish managed to dodge and weave his way around players to kick some impressive goals.

Josh Varsaci booted a terrific snap from an inspirational shepherd and Alec Kenneally had a magnificent long run down the centre of the ground to put one through.

Riley Ahlers was another outstanding contributor with accurate shots at goal.

A determined Brody Forrest managed to penetrate the forward line and boot his first goal.

Brothers Brody and Jack Lothringer showed courage, with Brody managing to outrun his dad, and Jack was fearless in the packs.

Stan Lawrence kept possession and fired off some handballs and Jacob Davison showed glimpses of brilliance moving the ball forward.

“That proud look on the kids faces just melts your heart. There was not one person in the crowd who didn’t have a smile on their face,” a spectator said following the match.

The game culminated in both sides forming a circle to sing the Southside club song.

“It’s a fantastic achievement, this match is a great reward for all their hard work,” Lawrence said.
