GIPPSLAND LEAGUE

A REPLAY of the 2014 grand final between Morwell and Wonthaggi Power headlines a bumper opening round of the 2015 Gippsland League season.

The 2015 fixture was released last week, with the two-time reigning premier set to host the Power at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Saturday, 11 April.

Round one will also feature two Sunday games, including the ‘battle of the birds’ clash between traditional foes Sale and Maffra.

West Gippsland rivals Drouin and Warragul meet in a twilight game in round two, immediately followed by South Gippsland clubs Wonthaggi Power and Leongatha duking it out under lights in the first of four night games in 2015.

Three Anzac Day games will mark the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing on 25 April, with Gippsland League playing host to Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League in the AFL Victoria Country Championships on 23 May.

Other highlights include an East Gippsland Community Round game between Bairnsdale and Sale on 16 May, the customary Queen’s Birthday Holiday clash between Traralgon and Morwell on 6 June and an Indigenous Round game between Wonthaggi Power and Leongatha on 4 July.

Gippsland League chair Greg Maidment said the 2015 fixture had “a bit of everything”.

“It’s shaping up as an exciting season, with plenty of showcase games for all our clubs,” Maidment said.

“For the first time since 2012 all our finals will be played in September and we have also managed to avoid a grand final clash with any other league in Gippsland.”

The grand final will be played at Traralgon Recreation Reserve on 26 September.
