CRICKET
GIPPSLAND Cricket’s all stars will collide on Sunday in Imperials Cricket Club’s inaugural ‘Hendo’s Heroes Bash’.
The day will feature an Australian XI versus a rest of the world team in a twenty20 showdown.
The players have been chosen from across Gippsland cricket leagues, with some district cricketers starring.
Traralgon stars Michael Warne, Greg Munro, John Keighran, Mark Rawson and Adam Brady will feature along with guest players such as Adrian Burgiel and Stuart Anderson.
Concept creator Luke Henderson has been involved in Gippsland sport for more than 20 years and said the idea was about bringing the community together.
“While local competitions are about winning premierships, this day is about bringing the Gippsland community together and promoting a cause through sports entertainment,” he said.
In his debut season as Imperials captain coach, Henderson said the day would support social inclusion.
“When I first spoke to the club about joining, I was very clear that I would only coach if the club was serious about improving their social obligations to the community,” he said.
“Sporting clubs and the young people involved in these clubs need to be leaders and increase the social inclusion of our communities.
“I have seen clubs continue to ask for money from the community without putting back.
“I’ve also seen too many people give up their involvement in sport because they have not been welcomed and I have witnessed the impact that this has on other aspects of their life, including employment and friendships.”
Former Ex Students star all-rounder Lee Stockdale will captain the Aussie XI and Toongabbie all-rounder Matt Golding will captain the World XI.
The day will be family oriented with no entry fee to watch the match.
Other attractions include jumping castles, face painting, games, music and raffles.
The bar and canteen will be open to the public.
Money raised on the day will be used to create and fulfil a social inclusion policy at the club and to support a local charity.
Entertainment starts at Catterick Cresent Oval at 1pm with the cricket match starting at 1.30pm.
