A STAUNCH game in defence by best on ground Mark Johnston helped minor premiers Heyfield repel Churchill in the reserves grand final, 14.12 (96) to 10.12 (72).
The Cougars hit the scoreboard hard in the opening half, taking a 19-point lead into the long break, following what had been a tight tussle in the opening term.
It was a resurgent Heyfield that took to the field after half-time.
Last year’s runners up quickly turned the tide to dominate the play, slamming home 10 goals to four to arrest back the lead and challenge for the title.
Departing veteran forward Brett Szabo went out on a high, kicking six goals in the victory.
