FOUR Gippsland Goannas have been enlisted to help the Victoria Country first XI defend the national over 60s cricket title this week in Hobart, Tasmania.
Ian Gibson, Kel Bond, Gordon Cowling and Ian Southall, the latter fresh from helping Australia’s masters to a first Ashes series win over England abroad, were selected for the Vic Country top team.
Southall and Gibson were at the wicket to guide Victoria Country home with three overs to spare in the 2014 final against Queensland.
Gippsland over 60s teammates Phil Higgins, Peter Dell and Rick Pask will also travel to the championships to compete for Victorian sides in the lower divisions.
The Goannas are going strong in domestic competition this season with the addition of new players Steve Shaw, Murray Moore and renowned local umpire Neil Meredith.
