Monash survived a scare and did enough to claim the spoils with a 2-1 win at home to Trafalgar Victory in the Latrobe Valley Soccer League on Sunday.
The Victory attacking trio of Anthony Sosa and brothers Josh and Nathaniel Paredes were on fire early, forcing Leon Cook to save on numerous occasions as the visitors took the ascendency.
It took some Tom Bramstedt brilliance to fire Monash into the lead at the 18 minute mark with a rasping volley from considerable distance, finding the back of the net.
The lead lasted 12 minutes until Josh Paredes equalised.
The game swung back and forth, with the visitors given the chance to take the lead early in the second half after Victory were awarded a penalty for a handball.
Paredes had an opportunity to double his tally, but a powerful effort was palmed away from the bottom corner by keeper Leon Cook.
Trafalgar was made to rue the miss with Shawn Lawrence quickest to pounce on a rebound off the crossbar to head home what would prove to be the decisive goal with 20 minutes remaining.
Monash held firm to move back into second ahead of its derby clash with Moe United at 3pm on Sunday at Olympic Park.
In other round 12 LSVL games, Newborough Yallourn United lost to Traralgon Olympians 1-2, Traralgon City drew with Fortuna ’60 3-3, Churchill United nabbed a win over Tyers Lighting 4-2, Moe United drew with Sale City 2-2 and East Gippsland United lost against Falcons 2000 1-4.
