NEWBOROUGH and Leongatha had a tough battle at Newborough on Saturday.
While the weather was overcast and the threat of rain ever present the Newborough green was a credit to greenkeeper Scott Jones as players were able to play their full range of shots to the joy of the spectators.
Leongatha adapted very well to the grass and trailed by one shot at the break.
After the break players went shot for shot with the opposition, but Newborough held their nerve to achieve a six-shot victory 68-62.
Tommy Lodge and his rink of Tony Knipping, Alan Grubb and Scott Jones had a tremendous day winning 30-10 against John Hall and his team.
Kevin Lovett and his rink of Brian Carpenter, Rod Lewis and George Lambos won 25-20 against Peter Spark and his rink.
Paul Michael and his rink nearly bridged the gap for Leongatha with a 32-13 win over Ryan Marston and his rink of Jo-Anne Michaels, Craig Thornton and John Backman.
Newborough goes on to play in the State Championships for Saturday Pennant at Moama over the weekend of May 21-22.
