Cannabis hot houses uncovered in Latrobe Valley

POLICE have seized more than 1000 cannabis plants from suburban home operations in the Latrobe Valley at the weekend.

Three people were arrested Saturday morning after four search warrants uncovered the plants and hydroponic equipment in Morwell and Traralgon addresses.

Latrobe Valley Inspector Mark Langhorn said the people had been charged with commercial trafficking and cultivating a drug of dependence or cannabis.

Two of the suspects were remanded and appeared at Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Insp Langhorn said the people allegedly had links to Melbourne and did not reside at the Morwell or Traralgon addresses.

“In the last eight months we’re getting more information about houses to grow cannabis in Gippsland,” Insp Langhorn said.

“It’s not a new thing, but it’s particularly people who aren’t residing in the area.”

Insp Langhorn said there were considerable safety issues, with the alleged offenders bypassing electricity from mains power.

He said the amount of power used was a fire hazard to neighbours and houses were completely damaged because of moisture and holes in the wall from hanging lights.

“Commons signs include windows that are covered up, blinds that are always drawn, and nobody living at the property. A car might be seen once or twice a week,” he said.
