TWIN City Archers Gippsland could be in for a new type of target practice following club president Peter Bennett’s tilt at the World Archery Field Championships.
Representing Twin City’s male contingent at the international event along with Alec Potts, Bennett finished 40th in one of the toughest events on the schedule, the men’s open compound.
Bennett attributed a lack of experience in unmarked target shooting to the result, with a portion of the event involving gauging distances to targets and angles without aid.
“The difference in the unmarked is what hurt the most; what they know about it and what we don’t know about it,” Bennett said.
“It’s a novelty to us but it’s the norm for them (the foreign competitors).
“In Australia if you get a 20 degree target that’s a difficult target but in this event it was an easy target.”
The experience in the discipline has prompted Bennett to establish an unmarked course in Morwell to enhance the skill and versatility of local archers.
“I want to set up this course and make it as close to that type of course as possible so that our local members and anyone who comes to compete can experience that difference,” he said.
“The idea is that next time if I qualify again I’d like to be at a different level.”
Twin City will host the Victorian State Clout Championships on Sunday at the Morwell golf driving range, where reigning national and state champion Bennett will look to assert his dominance over the field.
