This year the Morwell Art Group celebrates its 60th year as one of the region’s oldest and most profound art groups.
More recently the group relocated from the Latrobe Regional Gallery during renovations and is welcoming new members to join and experience a form of art.
Group secretary Ruby Nugent said the group offered an ideal space for the likes of former Hazelwood employees looking to relax and relieve themselves from the pressures of everyday life.
“It provides an outlet for people to take a step back and de-stress by painting and drawing. Even just colouring in a book can help people and it’s very therapeutic,” Ms Nugent said.
“If the newbies don’t know how to draw or paint, there’s always someone here willing to lend some assistance and we provide a real social alternative. Everyone gets together and mingles and has a lot of fun.”
The group has a wide range of members who draw and paint in oils, acrylics, pastels and water colours.
“We’ve been in the gallery for 50 odd years but we were lucky to find a new home in Morwell at The Spiritualist Centre, so we’re still here,” group treasurer Lionel Nugent said.
He said learning a form of art such as drawing or painting gives people an outlet to concentrate on while providing an escape from the stresses of reality.
The group meets Mondays, including public holidays, from 10am to 2pm at The Spiritualist Centre, 2 Avondale Road, Morwell.
Membership is $20 per year plus a weekly donation of $3 to cover the cost of refreshments.
