Funding for dairy industry

Gippsland’s dairy industry is well placed to attract $14.3 million in research and development funding over four years, allocated in the state budget.

With the Department of Primary Industries head dairy research facility located at Ellinbank, industry sources have said the facility is likely to attract the majority of the funding.

“Victoria is Australia’s dairy powerhouse, accounting for two thirds of national production and 86 per cent of dairy exports,” Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh said.

While the beef and lamb sectors, and pest and weed control efforts have attracted $9 million and $10.6 million respectively over four years as part of $61.4 million across the entire agriculture sector, Mr Walsh was unable to give an indication as to whether any of this money would be spent in Gippsland.
