LOCAL emergency service crews were called to Sheoke Grove in Churchill at 3:30pm this afternoon in response to reports of a house fire.

Residents of the street were greeted to a cloud of smoke, as crews quickly went about extinguishing the blaze.

The owner of the house was not home at the time of the fire and nobody was injured, with overall damages being minor.

Churchill CFA unit captain Shane Renwick explained the situation.

“We got paged to a structure fire and there was a blaze on the back veranda which took around five minutes to extinguish,” Mr Renwick said.

“The cause of the fire is currently unknown and investigations are currently underway.”

Sheoke Grove resident Stephen Foord was walking home with his children from the nearby Churchill North Primary School when the fire broke out and detailed his recollections of the event.

“When we were walking home from school we saw a bit of smoke, a haze and a few flames and the lady next door had rung the fire brigade to alert them of the situation,” Mr Foord said.

“Then all of a sudden there was a bit of a bang, a bigger flame and the CFA showed up pretty quickly and sorted it all out pretty quickly.”
