Yinnar pulled the biggest surprise of round 15 of Mid Gippsland football by pummelling Trafalgar to the tune of 80 points.
In the match of the round, league leaders Yinnar blasted third-placed Trafalgar almost out of the top four with a ruthless display of football.
Eight goals in the first quarter by Yinnar was exceptional football given the muddy conditions.
The Magpies had players running and kicking to position with unnerving accuracy and were able to create a huge gap Trafalgar could not make up.
Yinnar dictated the match and at the first change led 8.0 (48) to 2.2 (14).
The tempo slowed down in the second term as both teams got bogged down and only a goal each resulted.
Yinnar made amends in the third and fourth quarters with a total of 10 goals to Trafalgar’s three to finish with an impressive 19.6 (120) to 6.4 (40).
Twin forwards Mitch Renwick and Tim Aitken both kicked six each in a good display.
Lee Cummins, Mitch Renwick, Tim Aitken, Jadyn Embry and Josh Sleswick were voted as best, but there were many others who could have been named.
Trafalgar coach Jason Macfarlane would be worried with his team’s performance only three weeks out from finals.
Mirboo North v Morwell East
Morwell East was held scoreless in three quarters of football as Mirboo North systematically tore the Hawks apart.
The Tigers, kicking to the northern end, belted out 8.3 (51) in an opening burst that had the East bewildered.
It was a bit of a slug in the mud during the second quarter, but Mirboo North managed three goals.
Morwell East, trailling by 10 goals at the time, decided to become competitive and in a mad four minutes of play scored three goals through Matt Brown, Brad Gibson and Brandon Francis.
However, this was to be Morwell East’s final score as they went in at half-time 3.5 (23) to Mirboo North’s 11.4 (70).
After the break, Luke Palmer and Tim Traill dominated the match, however Mirboo North’s defence shut down the East
The Tigers ran out comfortable winners, 20.14 (134) to 3.5 (23).
Yarragon v Hill End
Yarragon avenged its first round loss to Hill End with a 15-point win over the Hillmen.
Conditions were heavy and this was reflected in the half-time scores at 2.4 (16) each.
The Panthers got the better of Hill End in the third.
Scott Wood showed his strength and good play from Mitch Jolly and Andrew Hewson helped Yarragon to a 16-point lead by three-quarter-time.
Although Hill End scored an early goal in the last term, Yarragon was equal to the task with a goal of its own.
Yarragon held on in a stamina-sapping game of football to win 6.4 (40) to Hill End’s 3.7 (25).
The win reversed positions on the ladder with Yarragon going to eighth and Hill End dropping to ninth.
Newborough v YYN
Newborough secured the Energy-Australia Cup after a series of victories over Yallourn Yallourn North.
The Bulldogs showed potential final’s form with a 104-point win against the Bombers.
Like their earlier meeting this season the Bulldogs got away early from YYN to establish a safe margin by half-time. Glenn Michie and Stuart Robertson asserted their influence around the forward zone.
However, the Bulldogs’ backmen were the true heroes, keeping YYN forward line in check.
The end couldn’t come quick enough for YYN, as Newborough wrapped up the match with a 5.4 (34) to 2.0 (12) final term to finish with an impressive victory.
Thorpdale v Boolarra
From the rich red soil of Thorpdale, Boolarra emerged victorious with a 34-point win.
However, it was earned the hard way with the Demons only taking control well into the third quarter.
Inaccuracy robbed Boolarra of a greater score and many good attempts at goal were wasted. The Demons’ also almost paid the price for their inaccuracy, scoring only five goals from 18 attempts and trailing by one-point at half-time.
Jesse Giardina, Boolarra’s focal point, did not let his team down with another important bag of six goals.
After half-time the Demons still found goals hard to come by, but still ran out winners 15.21 (111) to Thorpdale’s 12.5 (77).
