BOOLARRA Football Netball Club is set to field a side in the Mid Gippsland Football League under 18 competition this season, after coming up short on numbers in 2014.

A busy period of recruitment in the off-season has bolstered the ranks and the club is confident it has the necessary quota.

Demons premiership player James Holmes has been appointed as coach.

“James is highly respected around the club,” Boolarra FNC president Russell McGlade said.

“He is a local boy who started with us as a junior and has gone on to be one of our more experienced senior players having played in our 2011 premiership team.

“He is very committed and has a really good relationship with the young fellas.”

Holmes said he was excited to offer guidance to the next generation of Boolarra players.

“As someone that has come up through the juniors I know how important it is to be able to offer opportunities to the young blokes,” he said.

“We have some players that found themselves playing for other clubs that are keen to come back; recruiting is going very well but we want to offer the opportunity to any other players that are keen to have a game.

“It is fantastic to have the support of my team mates from the senior team that are helping with training and doing skills development work with the boys.”

The MGFL foundation club prides itself on its consistent finals appearances, family friendly atmosphere, great facilities and relationship with its netballers.

Senior coach Tony Giardina said it was a huge boost to the club to field strong junior sides.

“Junior football is obviously important to the future of any club,” he said.

“This is a great opportunity for young players to get introduced to the game.

“I am very pleased that so many of our current senior team came up through the juniors and they are doing very well.”
