Clash of the big cats

MORWELL and Moe will look to make amends for round 11 losses in the Gippsland League when they go head-to-head on Sunday.

The Tigers never appeared to challenge Sale in an extensive 81-point loss away.

But the Lions will think of last weekend’s game as the one that got away, with 2015 premier Traralgon turning a two-goal deficit at the last change into a 24-point victory.

Regardless, Moe coach James Blaser was proud of the effort his “undermanned” side put in and admitted it would be a tough slog to change the team come round 12.

“Traralgon are a good side and they had a few classy players turn up in the last 15 minutes of the game,” Blaser said.

“I was pretty proud of the effort we had; we were undermanned and have a fair few injuries. The guys really stood out and were really good all day.”

Moe sits three rungs higher than Morwell at seventh on the table and boasts a round three win.

But Blaser said his side would still respect the bottom-placed Tigers, who recently turned out to play against Traralgon to nab a one-point ball-game.

“Last time we played them (Morwell) they were really quick in the forward line,” Blaser said.

“They’ve got some really good players who can win them the game.

“We can’t go in and expect them to have the same performance as last weekend (against Sale), we will go in tough and expect a good challenge.”

Likewise Morwell coach Joel Soutar is looking forward to the challenge after a disappointing performance at the weekend.

He said the Tigers would look at a few things this week and try to put a four-quarter effort together against the Lions.

“The last few weeks we’ve been going alright and we went out on the weekend and didn’t put out the performance we were after,” Soutar said.

“I think we’ve got to bring our pressure and effort to be in the game straightaway.

“Our starts the last couple of weeks haven’t been the best, we have to get the early scoreboard pressure.”

First bounce for the Morwell-Moe clash will be at 2.20pm on Sunday at Moe Recreation Reserve.

In other round 12 matches, Bairnsdale will challenge Warragul at home, Leongatha travels to Maffra, Wonthaggi will host Sale and Traralgon takes on Drouin on home turf.

With seven rounds to go, an undefeated Leongatha side sits two games clear on top of the table, followed by Maffra, Traralgon, Wonthaggi Power and Warragul respectively.
