Baw Baw councillor dies

The Baw Baw Shire community is mourning the loss of its longest-serving councillor, Bill Harrington.

Mr Harrington, who represented the Mt Worth ward, encompassing Trafalgar and Thorpdale, died at his home on Friday night.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor, their four children and ten grandchildren.

Mr Harrington served on council since the first elections following amalgamation and was mayor from 2000 to 2001

He was a member of many sporting clubs and community boards including the Thorpdale and District Bowls Club, the Anglican Church, Trafalgar Community Bank, Trafalgar Probus Club and Trafalgar Rotary Club.

In his capacity as a councillor Mr Harrington represented council as Chair of the Arts and Culture Advisory committee, was vice president of Timber Towns Victoria, and as a member of the Gippsland Waste Management Group, the Australia Day Committee, the Keep Australia Beautiful Committee, the Trafalgar Recreation Precinct Masterplan Board, the Old Gippstown Committee and the Towns and Rural Communities network.
