Big Bash, NBL coming to Traralgon

A three-day National Basketball League pre-season tournament and a Big Bash League T20 blockbuster will take place in the Latrobe Valley before the end of the year following a state government announcement at Traralgon this morning.

The Melbourne Stars will take on the Hobart Hurricanes at Traralgon Recreation Reserve on Friday, 15 December and a three-day tournament including all eight NBL teams will take place between Thursday, 7 and Saturday, 9 September.

Melbourne Stars president Eddie McGuire said the Big Bash League clash would draw an enormous crowd to the Latrobe Valley in December.

“There’s a lot of work that’s gone on to make this happen,” Mr McGuire said.

The leagues’ visits to the region will include school clinics at Traralgon and Morwell as well as a number of engagement activities to promote physical activity and health and wellbeing.

The announcement forms part of the state government’s $85 million Latrobe Valley Sports and Community Initiative announced at Moe in March.

State Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said the sporting events would boost visitor economy and showcase the facilities the region has to offer.
